Patna: Two separate fires in Patna, Bihar’s capital, sparked alarm on Monday evening during Diwali festivities, but timely intervention by the city’s fire department prevented major damage or casualties.
The first blaze was reported at a laptop shop in the Hari Niwas Commercial Complex near Dak Bungalow Square. Smoke was seen rising from the shop shortly after closing time. Fire Department Commandant Ritesh Pandey said a fire engine stationed nearby responded immediately, followed by five additional engines. Firefighters used high hydraulic tools to break open the shop’s shutter and bring the fire under control. Preliminary investigations suggest the fire may have been caused by a short circuit in a lamp or other electronic equipment. While the shop suffered partial damage, no injuries were reported.
A second fire broke out at a scrap shop in the Karbigahiya police station area, reportedly triggered by firecrackers. Fire crews contained the blaze within minutes, averting potential destruction in the densely populated neighbourhood.
The Patna Fire Department had stepped up vigilance ahead of Diwali, placing personnel on alert and cancelling leave. Hospitals and security agencies were also briefed to respond to fire-related emergencies promptly.
Commandant Pandey urged residents to exercise caution when using electrical appliances or lighting lamps, and to supervise children handling firecrackers. “Our priority is to ensure that no one’s happiness is disrupted and Patna remains safe,” he said.
