Patna: OpenAI has announced that its ChatGPT Go subscription will be available free of charge for one year to users in India, beginning on November 4. The plan, which typically costs Rs 399 per month, will now offer a Rs 4,788 annual benefit to subscribers in the country.
The ChatGPT Go tier sits between the free and Plus plans and provides enhanced features including longer chats, increased image generation capacity, and extended memory for personalised conversations. The service also runs on GPT-5, OpenAI’s latest and most advanced model.
What ChatGPT Go Offers
The free version of ChatGPT offers limited chat and image generation capacity, along with shorter memory retention. In contrast, ChatGPT Go allows users to engage in longer, uninterrupted sessions, upload and generate more images, and maintain memory across multiple conversations. These features are designed to support both creative and professional users.
How to Access the Offer
Indian users can activate the offer by signing in to OpenAI’s website or app after November 4. Once logged in, they must confirm their India location, after which the Go features will be automatically enabled. Existing subscribers will also benefit, either through a refund or credit adjustment.
Why India, and Why Now
OpenAI describes India as its second-largest and fastest-growing market. The company said the move aims to expand AI accessibility beyond major cities, aligning with its “India-first” strategy and the country’s broader India AI initiative.
The decision also comes amid growing competition in the AI space. Google recently offered its AI Pro membership (Rs 19,500 per year) free to students, while Perplexity AI has partnered with Airtel to provide its premium services at no cost.
Who Stands to Benefit
OpenAI says the free subscription could be a “game-changer” across sectors:
- Students can use it for assignments, coding help, and image design.
- Businesses may leverage it for personalised customer service.
- Creators can accelerate content production through expanded image and file upload limits.
By offering ChatGPT Go free for a year, OpenAI hopes to democratise AI access across India’s diverse user base and reinforce its leadership amid intensifying competition in the generative AI market.
