Patna: In a briefing held on Saturday, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge provided insights into the ongoing election dynamics, revealing that 285 seats across three phases have witnessed polling thus far. Notably, campaigning for the fourth phase halted this evening, with voting scheduled for 96 seats on May 13.
Reflecting on recent campaign activities, Kharge underscored the significance of engagements in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. He highlighted growing challenges for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration, emphasizing public discontent evident during a recent rally attended by PM Modi. Economic concerns, particularly unemployment and poverty, resonated strongly among the electorate, casting doubts on the BJP’s electoral prospects.
Criticism was also directed at the Modi government’s handling of promises, particularly regarding job creation and economic development. Kharge pointedly questioned the government’s accountability in fulfilling its commitments, expressing concerns over the alleged misuse of investigative agencies to target political opponents.
Responding to queries about potential prime ministerial candidates, Kharge affirmed the alliance’s commitment to collective decision-making, suggesting that leadership choices would emerge through consensus.
Accompanying Kharge were prominent party figures including CPI(ML) general secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya and CPM leader Sitaram Yechury. However, RJD chief Lalu Prasad’s absence due to health reasons was noted.
Following the press conference, Kharge proceeded to address public gatherings in Samastipur and Muzaffarpur Lok Sabha constituencies, advocating for Congress candidates. These engagements underscored the party’s concerted efforts to mobilize support ahead of the upcoming phases of the election.
