Gayaji: In a landmark moment for women’s sports in the district, the Asmita District Athletics League — the first women-only athletics league in Gayaji — is set to kick off on Saturday at the Harihar Subramaniam Stadium, Gandhi Maidan. The District Athletics Association has described it as the biggest launch of women’s athletics ever held in Gayaji.
According to District Athletics Association Secretary Jitendra Kumar, around 350 girls have registered for the league, representing 30 schools across the district. He said the initiative aims to provide young athletes from Gayaji a platform to sharpen their skills and eventually compete at the national level.
The league will be inaugurated at 10:30 a.m. by former minister and current city MLA Dr. Prem Kumar, along with Wazirganj MLA Virendra Singh.
Gayaji District Olympic Association Patron Dr. Navneet Nischal and President Hariprapan alias Pappuji will attend as special guests.
A wide range of track and field events will be held throughout the day. Participants will compete in long-distance and short-distance races, high jump, shot put, and other throwing events. Officials said athletes delivering exceptional performances will be shortlisted for national-level competitions.
The association believes the event will mark a turning point for women’s athletics in the region, giving aspiring girls a stronger identity in sports and boosting the overall athletics ecosystem in Gayaji.
