Patna: New extensive parking restrictions have been imposed, from Sunday, as traffic police move to tackle chronic congestion across the city’s busiest stretches. The ban covers the corridor from Income Tax Golambar to Dak Bungalow Chowk and the route between Buddha Marg and GPO Golambar, where parking for both three-wheelers and four-wheelers has now been prohibited.
Officials said the measure is intended to ease the city’s persistent gridlock and ensure smoother movement in high-density areas. Parking has also been barred on Nehru Path along the same stretch, with enforcement teams instructed to act against any violations.
To accommodate vehicles redirected from the restricted zones, the authorities have opened two smart multi-level parking facilities: one opposite Taramandal, with capacity for 96 cars, and another inside the Maurya Lok complex. Three-wheelers will be permitted to use the Multi-Modal Parking site.
Traffic police have warned that illegal parking on the designated stretches will attract immediate penalties. “These restrictions are essential for reducing congestion and ensuring orderly flow,” officials said, urging residents to cooperate with the new system.
The clampdown forms part of a broader surveillance-led strategy to improve road safety and curb traffic violations. More than 3,300 monitoring devices are now operational across the city, including 2,602 CCTV cameras, 473 red-light violation detectors, 150 automatic number-plate recognition units, 12 speed-violation detectors, and 120 vehicle-classification cameras.
District magistrate Dr Tyagarajan S.M. has directed the transport department to take rapid action based on real-time footage, including automatically issuing challans to motorists caught flouting the rules. Departments have also been instructed to run special drives against illegal bus and auto halts, unauthorised parking, and overspeeding.
