Patna: Private security agencies in Bihar will no longer be allowed to use terms such as detective, intelligence, spy, investigation, surveillance, facility or supplier in their names, following a new directive from the state’s Home Department aimed at curbing public confusion about their roles.
The department said the language used by many agencies created the false impression that they had investigative or intelligence-gathering powers similar to government bodies. In several instances, firms had presented themselves to the media as “spy” or “surveillance” units, despite being licensed only to provide trained security guards.
Under the new order, any agency using these prohibited words will not receive a licence, and existing licences will not be renewed unless the name is changed. Officials said the step was necessary to prevent private firms from overstating their authority and misleading the public.
The Home Department has instructed district authorities to strictly enforce the rule and ensure that private security agencies comply with the revised naming guidelines before applying for registration or licence renewal.
