Patna: The Bihar government has intensified its drive against illegal sand mining, announcing cash rewards for information leading to the seizure of vehicles involved in unlawful operations. Informants will receive Rs 5,000 for the seizure of a tractor and Rs 10,000 for information about a truck, according to the state’s Mining Department.

Vijay Sinha, who recently took charge of the Mines and Geology Department, said the state was carrying out a joint operation with the Home Department. On Tuesday, he and senior officials conducted an aerial inspection of Doriganj in Saran district, described as one of the largest illegal sand mining hubs in Bihar. That night, authorities seized more than 3,000 trucks after video mapping the area.

Seized sand to be auctioned soon

Sinha said preparations were under way to auction the confiscated sand within 15 days, following directions from the home minister, Samrat Choudhary. He added that the process would be transparent and “leave no room for irregularities”.

The department has urged journalists, YouTubers and local residents to report illegal mining activities. Information can be submitted via three contact numbers released to the public:

  • 06122-215360
  • 9472238821
  • 9122414564

Officials said those who come forward with credible information will be recognised.

Police accountability

Sinha warned that police officers in areas where illegal mining is reported will be required to explain any failure to act. Vehicles loaded with sand often remain parked for hours at police stations, which he described as evidence of negligence. “Police laxity will not be tolerated,” he said, adding that the two departments would work jointly to ensure results.

In a meeting, strict instructions were issued to District Magistrates and Superintendents of Police across Bihar. Late-night raids resulted in the seizure of 28 tractors and the registration of multiple FIRs. Illegal mining equipment was confiscated from several districts.

Zero tolerance for criminal networks

Authorities said that although legal mining operations began on October 15, “anti-social elements” were attempting to exploit the system for profit. A zero-tolerance policy will now be enforced, and those cooperating with enforcement agencies will be honoured.

Expansion of legal mining operations

With assistance from the central government, the auction of five major mineral blocks in Bihar has been completed, and the auction process for seven more blocks is ongoing. Large-scale legal mining is expected to begin in south Bihar once the auctions conclude.

Sinha reiterated that the government’s objective was to establish a transparent and regulated mining framework. “Illegal miners will not be spared,” he said. “Action will be taken against those who fail to enforce the law.”
