Begusarai: A JDU leader was brutally murdered in Bihar’s Begusarai district after a group of armed men opened fire on him while he was asleep. The incident took place late at night in Pirnagar Ward No. 10 under the Chhoudahi police station area. The victim, 37-year-old Nilesh Kumar, had gone to sleep in a cattle shed after dinner when the attackers arrived and shot him multiple times. He suffered bullet injuries to his chest, neck and near his eye, and died on the spot.
Family members said they rushed out after hearing gunshots, but by that time nearly nine armed men had already fled. They said that everything was normal before the attack, and that Nilesh had eaten dinner with the family and later went to rest in the shed. The suddenness of the attack spread fear across the village, leaving residents shocked that such a killing could happen in the quiet locality.
Police reached the scene shortly after receiving information. One young man has been detained and is being questioned in connection with the murder. The body has been sent to Sadar Hospital for a postmortem, and a forensic team has begun collecting evidence from the spot. Senior officers, including the Manjhaul DSP, have inspected the crime scene and assured the villagers that the investigation will move quickly.
The victim’s father, Rambali Mahato, claimed that two villagers — Brijesh Kumar and Jaiprakash Mahato — were seen running away with weapons at the time of the shooting. He said there was no recent conflict, but an old land dispute existed between the families and may be linked to this attack. Begusarai SP Manish Kumar said that based on initial investigation, the murder does appear to be connected to the land issue. He added that both sides had filed FIRs in 2019, and that the police are looking at all angles while conducting raids to find the remaining accused.
