Sheikhpura/Patna: Physical verification of applicants under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Gramin) has begun in Bihar’s Sheikhpura district, with officials warning that false claims could result in criminal action.
Deputy development commissioner Sanjay Kumar said the verification process covers around 54,000 applicants who had identified themselves as homeless during a survey conducted three months ago. Panchayat-level workers, including housing assistants and vikas mitras, have been deployed to conduct door-to-door checks to assess the eligibility of applicants.
To ensure transparency, officials involved in the original survey have been assigned to different panchayats for verification. “This has been done to avoid any conflict of interest and ensure that the verification is fair and unbiased,” Kumar said.
Applicants found ineligible during the verification process may be excluded from the scheme, and first information reports (FIRs) could be registered against those who submitted false information. The verification is being carried out strictly in line with government-defined eligibility criteria and is expected to be completed before January 15, 2026.
Separately, the district administration announced financial support for beneficiaries who had previously received housing assistance but failed to complete construction. Under the Chief Minister’s Housing Scheme, eligible beneficiaries will be provided up to Rs. 50,000 to complete unfinished houses. Applicants seeking this assistance have been asked to submit a written request to the block development officer or the deputy development commissioner after initiating construction work.
Officials said the measures aim to ensure that housing benefits reach genuine beneficiaries while strengthening accountability in the implementation of the rural housing scheme.
