Patna: Bihar is set to remain under the grip of intense winter conditions as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts no significant relief from biting cold and dense fog until December 30. An orange alert for cold wave and fog continues to cover large parts of the state, driven by persistent cold westerly winds and an active jet stream over northern and eastern Bihar.
Forecasters say nights will remain particularly harsh, while dense fog during the early morning and evening hours is expected to severely reduce visibility across several districts. Dry weather is likely to prevail for the next seven days, offering little respite from the chill.
Minimum temperatures have already dipped sharply, with Aurangabad and Sabour in Bhagalpur recording lows of 7.4°C on December 26. Across Bihar, minimum temperatures ranged between 7.4°C and 13°C, with a further drop of one to three degrees recorded in parts of south-central and south-western districts over the past 24 hours.
Fog conditions remain severe. Visibility fell to just 100 metres in Patna, Gaya and Valmiki Nagar, where dense fog prevailed, while light to moderate fog was reported elsewhere in the state.
The IMD’s forecast indicates that cold day conditions and fog will continue in phases over the coming days. On December 27 and 28, very dense fog is expected in north-western and north-central districts, with cold day conditions likely in large parts of northern and southern Bihar. Similar conditions are forecast for December 29 and 30, particularly in western and north-central areas.

Meteorologists attribute the prolonged cold spell to an active western disturbance over north India and sustained snowfall in the Himalayan region, which is funnelling icy winds into the plains. Until there is a shift in wind patterns or a weakening of these systems, experts say Bihar is unlikely to see any meaningful improvement in weather conditions.
While a slight moderation in temperatures may be possible after December 30, authorities warn that residents should prepare for several more days of dense fog, reduced visibility and unusually cold daytime conditions across the state.
