Patna: A combination of plunging temperatures and dust-laden winds has pushed air pollution in Bihar to dangerous levels, with several cities reporting Air Quality Index (AQI) readings above 200, according to data from the Central Pollution Control Board.
Araria (AQI 258), Katihar (218), Kishanganj (214), and Bettiah (205) ranked among the worst-affected areas, all falling into the ‘poor’ category, where exposure can lead to respiratory discomfort even among healthy individuals. In Patna City, the AQI was recorded at 201, while Gandhi Maidan — previously in the ‘very poor’ zone — improved slightly to 180.
Cold air trapping pollutants close to the ground has contributed to the spike. Experts say falling temperatures increase air density, reducing vertical air movement and preventing pollutants like PM10 and PM2.5 from dispersing. The result is a dense, smog-like haze that has settled across northern and central Bihar.
Across the state, 11 cities reported moderate pollution levels, with AQI between 116 and 199. Only Buxar, at 84, registered in the ‘satisfactory’ category.
Health authorities have advised children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory conditions to limit their outdoor exposure. Masks have been recommended for outdoor activities, and residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel until air quality improves.
“Cold conditions are likely to persist, and pollution levels will fluctuate accordingly. Residents should stay updated and follow health advisories,” a pollution control official said.
As Bihar prepares for the peak winter season, experts warn that the pollution trend could worsen without intervention, given the ongoing construction activity, vehicular emissions, and topographical factors that make dispersion difficult.
