Patna/Jamui: Two people died after being struck by a train while attempting to cross railway tracks in Bihar’s Jamui district, prompting questions over emergency response and railway safety. The incident occurred on Saturday morning near Keribang village in the Malaypur police station area.
One of the victims has been identified as 45-year-old Pali Singh, a resident who was reportedly crossing the tracks on foot. Police say the second victim, believed to be around 55 years old, has not yet been identified. Officers are questioning residents in nearby villages.
Family members allege Singh’s body remained on the tracks for nearly two hours. Information about the discovery of the bodies was received late. Due to the delayed information, a train passed over the bodies. Relatives later helped remove remains from the scene. The incident has heightened anxiety among residents, who described the response as “delayed” and “distressing”.
Station manager Nitish Kumar told reporters the delay was due to a late report of the incident. “Once informed, we halted movement and cleared the track,” he said. Malaypur police chief Vikas Kumar confirmed that a case has been registered and investigations are underway.
The deaths have fuelled concern about the lack of fencing, warning systems, and patrolling on rural stretches of the railway network, as residents continue to use the tracks as pedestrian routes.
