Patna: Bihar is facing a prolonged spell of winter disruption, with dense fog and cold day conditions forecast to persist across large parts of the state until January 3, according to the India Meteorological Department.
The meteorological department has issued an orange alert for the next five days, warning that poor visibility and below-normal daytime temperatures could continue to affect daily life, transport and road safety. While no rainfall is expected, the weather is likely to remain dry for the next seven days, officials said.
Forecast highlights
On December 29, cold day conditions are likely in parts of north-central, north-eastern, south-central and south-eastern Bihar. Dense fog is expected in one or two places across most districts.
On December 30, similar conditions are forecast, with cold day conditions in some areas and dense fog persisting in isolated pockets across much of the state.
By December 31, dense fog is likely in several northern and south-western districts. Cold day conditions are expected in some places across most districts, with fog continuing to reduce visibility during morning hours.

From January 1 to January 3, dense fog is forecast in parts of north-central, north-western, south-central and south-western Bihar, while isolated fog is also likely in north-eastern and south-eastern districts.
On January 4, fog may ease slightly but is still expected in some northern and south-eastern parts of the state, with isolated pockets in the south-west as well.
Meteorologists said moderate to dense fog could continue in several areas over the next four to five days, particularly during early mornings and late nights.
What is driving the conditions

According to the meteorological centre, a western disturbance is currently influencing the region, with mid-tropospheric westerly winds prevailing. A cyclonic circulation over sub-Himalayan West Bengal has extended into northern Bangladesh, while an upper-air cyclonic circulation persists over north-eastern Assam and adjoining areas. Together, these systems are sustaining the cold spell and trapping moisture near the surface, leading to widespread fog.

Authorities have advised people to remain cautious, especially while travelling during early hours, as visibility may drop sharply in fog-prone areas. Cold day conditions, marked by unusually low daytime temperatures, are also expected to continue in several districts over the coming days.
