Patna: The Eastern Link Canal, a key component of Bihar’s ambitious Son Canal System, is approaching the final stages of restoration and lining work, promising timely irrigation for millions of farmers across Patna and neighbouring districts.
The Water Resources Department has been overseeing the modernisation of the 10.2 km canal, which involves expanding old command areas and constructing an advanced irrigation network. Once complete, the canal will feed water into the Patna Main Canal and the Eastern Son High-Level Canal, ensuring supply reaches the farthest reaches of the region’s agricultural fields.
Alongside the canal, a 7.46 km bituminous service road is under construction to facilitate canal inspections and improve rural connectivity. Both projects are expected to be completed by the end of the month.
Officials say the initiative will directly benefit 1,539 hectares of cultivable land and indirectly support around 164,102 hectares. Districts set to gain include Aurangabad, Gaya, Arwal, and Patna, with specific blocks such as Barun, Konch, Paliganj, Bihta, and Bikram among the primary beneficiaries.
