Patna: Patna Junction, the busiest part of Bihar’s capital, is about to undergo a historic transformation. The city has begun deep excavation work for a new underground metro station near the junction roundabout. Once completed, this will allow passengers to step off a train and board the metro within minutes. Officials say the station will be a modern marvel, with six underground platforms designed on the lines of some of the largest metro stations in the world. Each platform will be fully air-conditioned, prioritising passenger safety, comfort, and convenience.
The new underground metro line will connect several key parts of the city, including Patna Junction, Vidhyut Bhawan, Vikas Bhawan, Patna Zoo, Rajabazar, and Rukanpura. This section will link the city’s busiest areas, making commuting faster and easier for thousands of people. At Patna Junction, two main entry and exit points are being planned. One will be near the old milk market, while the other will be in front of Buddha Smriti Park. A 17-meter-long subway will connect the milk market gate to the junction roundabout, ensuring smooth pedestrian movement. Barricades have been set up, and work has already started in full swing.
Technically, the project is very challenging because the metro line will pass directly under the railway station. The lines of both corridors will meet near Patna Junction, and the metro will continue underground toward Mithapur. For this, the authorities need permission from the railway administration. A new Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) is expected to be launched in June to carry out this deep excavation. The underground line will eventually rise above ground near Karbigahiya, and construction of this section has been awarded to Hindustan Construction Company. The underground section is planned to be completed within the next 36 months.
The second phase of the Patna Metro is now being executed under the supervision of Patna Metro Rail Corporation Limited (PMRC). This local oversight is expected to speed up decision-making and give new momentum to the project. Experts say that building a metro beneath Patna Junction will not only be a technical achievement but also a major step in the city’s development. The project is expected to reduce traffic congestion, improve public transport, and make Patna one of the modern metro cities of India. Commuters can soon look forward to boarding the metro almost as soon as they get off the train.
