Patna: The Bihar government is stepping up efforts to tackle the rising tide of cybercrime with the launch of dedicated Cyber Forensic Units at the state’s Forensic Science Laboratories (FSLs) in Patna and Rajgir, scheduled for March.
Additional Director General of Police (ADG) Parasnath of the Criminal Investigation Department said the units are being established to conduct scientific examinations of digital evidence, including mobile phones, laptops, hard drives, social media accounts, and emails. “The number of cybercrimes is constantly increasing, and there is a pressing need for specialised forensic capabilities,” he said.
The initiative is part of a broader expansion of Bihar’s forensic infrastructure. ADG Parasnath confirmed plans to set up six new FSLs this year in Gaya, Bettiah, Munger, Saharsa, Purnea, and Chhapra. The move aims to accelerate the investigation of pending cases and reduce delays in generating forensic reports.
In a separate statement regarding the death of a NEET student at a girls’ hostel in Patna’s Chitragupta Nagar area, ADG Parasnath said the FSL team had visited the scene and collected evidence. He added that a senior officer is personally monitoring the investigation to prevent any lapses, with the FSL report expected within four to five days. “The police and forensic agencies are treating this matter with utmost seriousness. The truth will be brought to light,” he said.
Experts say the expansion of FSLs and cyber forensic units could significantly strengthen law enforcement’s capacity to combat cybercrime and ensure faster, evidence-based justice in serious cases.
