Patna: Bihar Police have introduced state-of-the-art patrol vehicles to most accident-prone national highways in the state. Equipped with cameras and radar, these vehicles will patrol every 50 km and facilitate the issuance of e-challans for traffic violations.
According to police headquarters sources, four national highways with the highest accident rates have been selected for the initial phase. These include NH-28 (Chhapra-Betia-Lauria-Bagaha), NH-30 (Patna-Bakhtiarpur), NH-31 (Barauni-Muzaffarpur-Piprakothi), and NH-57 (Muzaffarpur-Darbhanga-Purnia). A total of 23 highway patrol vehicles will cover 1125 km on these routes.
The vehicles, fitted with Ford speed radar and cameras, will be capable of issuing automatic challans. They will also be equipped with emergency tools such as gas cutting machines, traffic cones, and foldable stretchers. Linked to the Dial-112 system, these vehicles will serve as first responders in the event of accidents on the highways.
Additionally, 1560 personnel have been sanctioned under the Highway Patrol Scheme to enhance road safety. For urban areas, 56 new vehicles have been allocated to 28 newly established traffic stations, with each station receiving two vehicles. One vehicle is designated for general traffic duties, while the other is assigned to DSP traffic.
