Patna: Bihar’s Education Department has announced a major initiative to strengthen primary education across the state, with plans to distribute approximately 3,500 Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN) kits to government schools before the start of the new academic session. The kits are expected to reach schools by the last week of February, directly benefiting around three lakh children in grades one to three.
The FLN kits are designed to focus on building essential reading, writing, and arithmetic skills in young learners, shifting away from traditional textbook-based teaching towards activity-based learning. Each child in the first three grades will receive an individual kit, enabling them to practice at school and at home.
Education officials emphasise that the initiative goes beyond academics. The kits include colours, drawing materials, and project-based activities intended to foster creativity, confidence, and overall development in children.
School headmasters have been tasked with overseeing the proper use of the kits and ensuring their safe storage. Additionally, the use of FLN kits has been made mandatory for teaching children in grades four and five, reflecting a wider commitment to improve learning outcomes in early education.
Experts and officials alike view the initiative as a crucial step in enhancing the quality of basic education in Bihar. If implemented effectively, the scheme could lead to marked improvements in literacy and numeracy skills among primary school students in the coming years.
