Patna: Patna is set to install 24 new automated traffic signals across the city as part of a broader push to modernise urban infrastructure under the Smart City initiative.
The new signals, which can automatically detect vehicles and regulate traffic through red, amber and green lights, will be connected to the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) operated by Patna Smart City Limited. Officials say the move is aimed at streamlining traffic flow and strengthening digital monitoring across key junctions.
At present, Patna has around 28 traffic signals. Following approval of a proposal by the traffic superintendent, the total number will rise to 52. While the system will largely function automatically, authorities will retain the ability to manually operate the signals when required.
The decisions were taken at a meeting of the Patna Smart City Limited board on Wednesday, where several other infrastructure and revenue-related proposals were cleared.
Among them was a plan to frame a policy for restoring deteriorating Smart City assets, including e-toilets installed across the city. A survey of the facilities has already been conducted, and officials said clear accountability mechanisms would be established for their operation and maintenance once they are refurbished. The civic body expects the restored facilities to generate revenue after reopening.
In a bid to increase income streams, the Maurya Mandapam and a gym located in Mauryalok will be outsourced. The board also approved the installation of high-mast lights at designated locations to address poorly lit stretches between the subway and the multi-level parking area near the General Post Office, following a site survey.
The Common Facility Center under construction in Mithapur will be developed as a G+3 building, housing amenities including a restaurant, bank, ATM, library, salon and retail outlets. Officials said work on the building is expected to be completed by March.
Separately, the state’s department of environment, forest and climate change will undertake renovation work at a park in Kankarbagh as part of the approved proposals.
City authorities say the measures are intended to improve urban mobility, enhance public amenities and ensure better utilisation of Smart City assets.
