Patna: In a rare and inspiring move, Bihar minister and senior Janata Dal (United) leader Ashok Choudhary has started a new chapter in his career as an assistant professor of political science at Patliputra University. While continuing his responsibilities as the state’s building construction minister and a member of the Bihar Legislative Council, Choudhary will now also be seen teaching students inside the classroom. The decision has attracted attention across Bihar, as it is unusual for a serving minister to take up a teaching role in a public university.
Speaking after formally joining the university, Choudhary said the moment filled him with pride and happiness. He shared that education has always been close to his heart and that returning to campus as a teacher feels like a dream fulfilled. He thanked Magadh University, where he completed his higher studies and research, for shaping his academic journey. He also expressed gratitude to the leadership of Patliputra University for giving him the opportunity to serve students and contribute to the academic environment.
Choudhary is not only a politician but also a scholar. He holds a PhD in political science and later earned a D Litt for his research on the relevance of caste surveys in Bihar. His academic work focuses on society, governance and democracy, subjects that connect closely with his political life. He had applied for assistant professor posts in Bihar universities in 2020 and, after a long selection process, was finally chosen in June 2025. With all formalities now complete, he has taken charge and begun teaching.
Leaders from his party believe his presence in the classroom will greatly benefit students. JDU leader Abhishek Jha said that Choudhary’s experience in government and the legislature will help students understand how politics works in real life. Through his lectures, students will not only study books but also learn how the constitution, democracy and public policy operate in practice. Many feel this rare combination of politics and education will motivate young people and strengthen the image of the university.
