Patna: The Patna Metro Rail Corporation Limited has successfully conducted a trial run of metro services between Bhootnath and Malahi Pakri stations, marking a key milestone in the expansion of rapid transit infrastructure in the Bihar capital. Officials confirmed that the testing exercise was completed on Thursday and represents progress towards enhancing safe and modern public transport in Patna.
According to PMRCL, commercial operations on the Bhootnath–Malahi Pakri section will begin after mandatory statutory approvals are secured. Currently, metro services are operational only between Pataliputra Bus Terminal and Bhootnath, making the extension an important step in improving route coverage for commuters across the eastern parts of the city.
The trial was carried out on the elevated corridor in line with prescribed technical and safety protocols. During testing, the train was operated at multiple speed levels, including its maximum permitted speed, to evaluate performance across critical systems. Engineers conducted detailed checks of signalling efficiency, braking capability, track alignment, overhead electrification, station coordination, communication infrastructure and emergency response mechanisms.
Technical specialists and project engineers supervised the trial to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements. Officials said the train’s performance was satisfactory, paving the way for the next stage involving comprehensive safety inspection and final certification. Once approvals are granted, authorities will move towards initiating commercial services on the extended corridor.
The expansion is expected to ease traffic congestion and improve daily commute times for thousands of residents. Urban planners believe the operationalisation of the Bhootnath–Malahi Pakri stretch will also strengthen connectivity and contribute to a more efficient and sustainable transport network in Patna.
