Patna: An awareness campaign aimed at reducing air pollution during Holi has been launched by the Bihar State Pollution Control Board, as authorities warn against the burning of toxic materials during Holika Dahan. The board has urged residents not to use items such as old tyres, plastic, rubber and thermocol in bonfires, saying they release harmful pollutants that can severely affect air quality and public health.
The initiative, which runs from February 27 to March 1, 2026, relies on street theatre performances to communicate its message. Officials say the use of nukkad natak a traditional and accessible form of public storytelling is intended to engage communities directly and encourage environmentally responsible celebrations.
The campaign is being carried out across 11 districts: Patna, Gaya, Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga, Bhagalpur, Begusarai, Siwan, Purnia, Bihar Sharif, Buxar and Munger. In each district, performances are being staged at four different locations daily for three consecutive days, bringing the total number of venues to 156.
On the opening day, performances were held at 52 locations across the participating districts, according to the board. Authorities said the drive is part of a broader effort to raise awareness about seasonal spikes in air pollution and to encourage citizens to adopt safer and more sustainable festival practices.
