Bhagalpur: Plans for a large sports village in Goradih block of Bhagalpur district have received cabinet approval, paving the way for a significant expansion of sporting infrastructure in eastern Bihar. The initiative, driven by sports minister Shreyasi Singh, is being viewed as a strategic investment in grassroots talent and regional sports development.
The state cabinet authorised the transfer of around 15.01 acres of government land to the department of sports, clearing a key administrative step for the project. Officials said the relevant departments have been directed to complete procedural formalities quickly so construction can begin without delay.
According to project details, the sports village will feature international-standard indoor and outdoor facilities for cricket, football, kabaddi, kho-kho, tennis, badminton, basketball, volleyball, archery, shooting, martial arts and hockey. Plans also include professional coaching support, fitness centres and physiotherapy services to help athletes prepare for state, national and international competitions.
Singh said the complex would provide new opportunities for young athletes from Banka, Bhagalpur, Jamui and Munger, many of whom currently travel outside the state for advanced training. The facility is expected to host district and state tournaments regularly and could later accommodate high-performance training camps for major global events.
Beyond sport, the project is anticipated to stimulate the local economy by increasing demand in transport, hospitality and related services. Officials also expect improvements in supporting infrastructure, including roads, electricity and water supply, as development progresses in the surrounding rural areas.
Singh described the sports village as a step towards fulfilling the aspirations of young athletes in eastern Bihar, expressing confidence that improved infrastructure would help them compete more effectively on national and global stages.
