Patna: Government hospitals across Bihar will soon provide Ayurvedic and homeopathic medicines in addition to allopathic drugs, marking a significant expansion of healthcare services. The decision follows the deputation of AYUSH doctors to public health centres, allowing patients seeking alternative treatments to receive corresponding medicines. Authorities say the move aims to integrate traditional medical systems with modern healthcare and improve accessibility for rural and urban populations alike.
The responsibility for procurement, storage and distribution of these medicines has been assigned to Bihar Health Services Infrastructure Corporation, which is developing a structured supply mechanism to prevent shortages. Officials stated that alternative medicines will also be made available in 294 Ayushman Arogya Mandirs, primary healthcare centres designed to offer comprehensive medical services at the local level. The initiative is expected to broaden treatment choices and strengthen patient trust in public healthcare institutions.
Health department sources said the increasing demand for Ayurvedic and homeopathic treatments influenced the policy decision. Many patients visiting government centres prefer non-allopathic remedies, prompting authorities to incorporate traditional medical options. The state government believes that a multi-system approach will enhance healthcare outcomes and reduce dependence on a single treatment model. Coordination between medical systems is being prioritised to ensure that patients receive appropriate care based on their conditions.
Officials added that a systematic framework for medicine procurement and distribution is under preparation to guarantee continuous availability. The initiative reflects broader efforts to modernise public healthcare while preserving traditional medical knowledge.
