Patna: In Patna, emotional protests erupted outside the chief minister’s residence after reports that Nitish Kumar might contest the Rajya Sabha elections. Workers of the Janata Dal (United) gathered in large numbers, shouting slogans and some breaking down in tears, insisting that Nitish should remain in Bihar rather than move to Delhi.
Protesters also turned their anger toward party leadership. Demonstrators raised slogans against Union minister Lalan Singh, labelling him “Jaychand”, a historical reference implying betrayal. Some called for his political removal, shouting slogans of “death to Lalan Singh”. The atmosphere became tense, requiring heightened police presence.
Tensions escalated when workers surrounded the car of MLA Prem Mukhiya as he approached the chief minister’s residence. Reports indicate the vehicle was damaged before he withdrew, prompting authorities to tighten security.
One protester, Rajiv, wept outside the residence, saying he had campaigned door to door in Nitish’s name and feared for the party’s future if the chief minister stepped away. “The people voted for Nitish, not for anyone else,” he said, questioning the party’s direction.
In response, Lalan Singh issued a statement acknowledging Nitish’s foundational role in the JD(U) and emphasising that party members would respect the chief minister’s decisions. He also highlighted Bihar’s development under his leadership.
Political speculation has intensified that he may file his nomination for the Rajya Sabha, potentially attending the assembly with BJP national president Nitin Nabin. The possibility of Amit Shah visiting Patna during the nomination process has further fuelled political activity, according to Sanjay Saraogi, president of the Bihar BJP.
Amid the uncertainty, an internal meeting was held at the chief minister’s residence, attended by JD(U) working president Sanjay Jha and minister Vijay Chaudhary. Officials said the discussion focused on the prevailing political climate and future strategy.
