Bhagalpur: Residents of Bhagalpur in Bihar may soon see relief from heavy traffic as construction of a nearly four-kilometre-long four-lane road between Lohia Bridge and Aliganj Bypass is expected to begin shortly. Officials say preparations are underway to start the project next month, with a target to complete the work by December 2026.
According to the state’s Road Construction Department, the tender process for the project is in its final stages. Munger-based Niranjan Sharma & Company is currently considered the frontrunner for the contract. Six construction firms participated in the bidding process, including Baba Construction, Rajveer Construction, Bal Krishna Bhalotia, JV Construction and Srisht Construction.
The department has estimated the cost of the project at around Rs 50.17 crore, with plans to complete construction within a year. The route passes through one of the busiest stretches of the city, where traffic congestion is a frequent issue. Officials believe that once the four-lane road is operational, it will significantly reduce traffic pressure and improve daily commuting for residents.
Before construction begins, authorities will shift or remove electricity poles and overhead wires along the route. The electricity department has already prepared an estimate for this work and will soon submit it to the Road Construction Department. Local authorities are also expected to clear roadside encroachments to ensure the construction proceeds without delays.
Meanwhile, the department is also planning another major road project in the region — a nearly 15km four-lane road connecting Bhagalpur, Agarpur and Kotwali. The tender for this project was previously cancelled due to the lack of technical approval, but officials say the process will be restarted after the required clearance was granted.
Once completed, the Bhagalpur–Kotwali road is expected to benefit more than 200,000 people from around four dozen villages. The route will pass through Mirjanhat, Sikandarpur and Gudhatta, linking with the Lohia Bridge–Aliganj road and further connecting to Kajraili and Amarpur.
Arvind Gupta, executive engineer of the Road Construction Department, said construction of the Lohia Bridge–Aliganj four-lane road is expected to begin by May, while work on the Bhagalpur–Kotwali road could start in June. Officials say the projects are aimed at improving connectivity and easing traffic pressure across the growing city.
