Patna: Syed Ata Hasnain, a former senior officer of the Indian Army and Bihar’s newly appointed governor, arrived in Patna on Thursday ahead of his swearing-in ceremony scheduled for March 14.
The oath ceremony will be held at Lok Bhavan, where the Patna High Court chief justice will administer the oath of office and secrecy. Several political leaders and senior officials are expected to attend the event, and administrative preparations are already under way.
Hasnain, a retired lieutenant general, served in the army for nearly four decades and is widely known for his work in strategic leadership and national security. Over the course of his career, he held a number of key operational and administrative posts, including assignments in sensitive border regions.
Between 2012 and 2014, he commanded the Srinagar-based Chinar Corps in Jammu and Kashmir. During this period he oversaw counter-terrorism operations and security management in the region, while also promoting a policy aimed at building trust with local communities, often described as a “hearts and minds” approach.

Under his leadership, the corps initiated programmes focused on education, sports and employment opportunities for young people in Kashmir, with the aim of integrating youth into the mainstream and strengthening ties between the military and local residents.
After retiring from the army, Hasnain continued in public service. He served as a member of the National Disaster Management Authority and also held the position of chancellor at the University of Kashmir.
His appointment as governor of Bihar marks a transition from military and administrative roles at the national level to a constitutional position in one of India’s largest states. Officials said his experience in leadership and governance is expected to contribute to the functioning of the state administration.
