Patna: The Department of Mines and Geology in Bihar has launched an online licensing system for the storage of sand and gravel, aiming to promote legal mineral trade and improve the availability of key construction materials across the state.
Under the new system, individuals and businesses can apply for mineral storage licences through the state’s mining portal without visiting government offices. Officials say the digital facility will simplify a process that was previously complex and time-consuming, enabling applicants to complete formalities from home.
The move is expected to provide relief to homeowners, contractors and construction agencies by ensuring easier access to sand and gravel. Licensed storage centres will help maintain a steady supply in the market, which could reduce delays in housing projects and other infrastructure works.
The government also believes that the new system will help streamline transportation and supply management. According to Deputy Chief Minister and Mines Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha, the department’s aim is to make construction materials available to the public in a convenient and transparent manner.
He added that the initiative would also strengthen monitoring mechanisms to curb illegal mining and unauthorised storage activities while increasing mineral revenue for the state. The online licensing and storage framework, he said, will encourage legitimate mineral trade and ensure greater transparency across the sector.
