Patna: A major push towards digital education in Bihar is underway, with the central government approving the establishment of ICT labs in 5,904 schools for the 2026-27 financial year.
Under the scheme, the state will receive Rs 377.85 crore to set up technology-enabled learning infrastructure across secondary, higher secondary and Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas (KGBVs). Officials said preparations for the rollout have already begun, with work expected to start in May.
Rs 6.40 Lakh Per School
Each ICT lab will be developed at an estimated cost of Rs 6.40 lakh, covering the procurement of modern technological equipment aimed at enhancing classroom learning.
The rollout will take place in phases, with the education department viewing the initiative as a step towards addressing the shortage of digital resources in schools.
Expansion Of Existing Infrastructure
ICT labs are already operational in 1,987 secondary and higher secondary schools across Bihar, set up over the past two years with central assistance.
The state had initially proposed labs in 9,360 schools, but approval has currently been granted for 5,904 institutions. Once implemented, the total number of schools equipped with ICT labs will rise to 7,891, significantly expanding the reach of digital education.
Focus On Girls’ Education
The approved list includes 627 Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas, bringing residential girls’ schools into the digital learning framework.
Officials said the move would help students in these institutions gain access to technical knowledge, improving both academic outcomes and future opportunities. The initiative is also expected to strengthen efforts to make education more inclusive.
Plans To Extend To Elementary Schools
The education department is also working on a plan to extend ICT labs to elementary schools. A proposal is being developed to cover 31,297 middle schools, targeting students from classes 6 to 8.
At present, ICT labs are operational in 1,203 elementary schools. Authorities said the expansion would help build a strong foundation for digital learning from an early stage, aligning with broader goals of integrating technology into education across all levels.
