New Delhi/Patna: Prime minister Narendra Modi has described Bihar as the “backbone of a Viksit Bharat” in a letter to chief minister Nitish Kumar on the occasion of Bihar Diwas, highlighting the state’s cultural legacy and ongoing development.
In his message, PM Modi extended greetings to the people of Bihar and reflected on the state’s historical significance, from the legacy of Gautama Buddha and Chanakya to its tradition of ancient centres of learning. He said Bihar has long played a defining role in shaping the country’s intellectual and cultural trajectory.
Focus on development and infrastructure
The prime minister also pointed to recent infrastructure developments in the state, including new airport terminals in Patna and Purnia, the Aunta-Simaria bridge, and initiatives such as the proposed National Makhana Board.
He noted that central assistance to Bihar has increased significantly in recent years compared with the previous decade, contributing to faster development.
Praise for leadership
PM Modi commended CM Nitish’s leadership, saying it had helped bring stability and strengthened governance in the state. He expressed confidence that Bihar would play a key role in achieving the broader goal of a developed India.

Responding to the letter, CM Nitish said it was a matter of pride for the state and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to social justice, good governance and infrastructure development.
He added that with continued support from the central government, Bihar was well positioned to accelerate its growth and strengthen its place among leading states.
