Patna: A major agricultural market in Patna is set for a high-tech overhaul, with officials promising improved facilities, digital trading access and better returns for farmers once work is completed.
Modernisation and renovation are under way at the Musallahpur agricultural produce market yard, backed by funding of Rs 68.41 crore from the state’s agriculture department. Authorities say the redevelopment will transform the ageing mandi into a more organised and efficient trading hub for farmers and merchants.
The upgraded complex is expected to include basic infrastructure such as drinking water, restrooms, lighting and security services, alongside dedicated trading platforms and warehouse facilities. The project is being executed by Bihar State Bridge Construction Corporation Limited, which has indicated that construction is likely to be completed by the end of 2026.
Officials say the revamped market will also be integrated with the National Agriculture Market (e-NAM) platform, allowing farmers to access buyers beyond local markets and potentially secure better prices for their produce. The digital linkage is intended to connect traders in Patna with national and international markets.
Local trader groups have meanwhile called for additional facilities. The Fruits and Vegetables Vendors’ Association has urged the state agriculture minister to include a controlled atmosphere cold storage unit, two specialised chambers for storing oranges, and an exhibition hall within the premises. There have also been demands to ease traffic restrictions, including exempting farmers’ vehicles entering through Gate No. 2 from existing no-entry rules.
Despite progress on the broader upgrade, some structural work remains pending. Around three-quarters of the market yard has yet to be formally measured and demarcated, delaying the construction of a boundary wall. District officials, including the circle officer and sub-divisional officer, have been instructed to expedite the process to avoid further delays.
