Bodh Gaya: A major international centre inspired by Dalai Lama is under construction in Bodh Gaya and is expected to be completed by 2028, aiming to promote peace, compassion and the study of ancient knowledge traditions.
The foundation stone for the Dalai Lama Center was laid on January 3, 2023 marking the beginning of a project that organisers say will bring together Indian and Tibetan philosophical traditions under one roof. Once completed, the institution is expected to serve as a global platform for research and dialogue on subjects including logic, psychology and classical Indian knowledge systems.
The project is being overseen by the Dalai Lama Trust, with support from India’s Ministry of External Affairs. Construction is being fast-tracked, with authorities targeting completion by the end of 2028.
Officials describe the centre as an academic and cultural hub that will attract scholars and researchers from around the world. It is also expected to focus on promoting non-violence and exploring pathways to resolve regional and international conflicts through dialogue.
The development has been supported jointly by the central government and the Bihar state government, which has allocated around 30 acres of land for the project. Authorities say the collaboration reflects a broader effort to position India’s philosophical traditions within global conversations on peace and ethics.
According to planners, the centre’s curriculum and activities will be guided by the 14th Dalai Lama’s core commitments, including the promotion of human values such as compassion and tolerance, fostering interfaith harmony, and preserving Tibetan culture.
Located in Bodh Gaya—already one of the world’s most significant Buddhist pilgrimage sites—the new centre is expected to expand the town’s role beyond religious tourism into a global hub for intellectual and ethical discourse.
