Jamui: In a significant push towards clean energy and affordable electricity, the district administration in Jamui is set to install free solar power systems for 10,000 below-poverty-line (BPL) families under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana.
Officials said the initiative will be rolled out in phases, with the first phase covering 10,000 households. The scheme is being implemented on a first-come, first-served basis, with priority given to applicants who complete the online process before the March 31 deadline.
According to the Electricity Department, the district has around 159,000 BPL consumers, making the scheme a major intervention aimed at reducing energy costs for economically weaker sections.
Sanjeev Kumar, executive engineer in the department, said selected beneficiaries would not have to bear any installation costs, with the government covering the entire expenditure. He described the scheme as a “golden opportunity” for poor households to eliminate electricity expenses.
The government has already introduced provisions for up to 125 units of free electricity. With the addition of solar systems, beneficiaries are expected to gain greater energy independence while also reducing reliance on conventional power infrastructure.
Officials added that the installation process will begin within days of application approval, ensuring swift implementation.
The district administration has urged all eligible residents to apply within the deadline to benefit from the scheme. Alongside easing financial pressure on low-income households, the initiative is also expected to contribute to the broader goal of expanding clean energy adoption in rural areas.
