Patna: The political landscape in Bihar appears to be entering a decisive phase, with chief minister Nitish Kumar expected to resign from the state legislative council by March 30, according to sources familiar with the matter.
While there has been no official confirmation, the development is widely seen as a procedural step following Kumar’s recent election to the Rajya Sabha, which constitutionally prevents a member from holding seats in two legislatures simultaneously.
Under constitutional provisions, an individual must vacate one post within 14 days of being elected to another legislative body. With that deadline approaching, Kumar’s resignation from the legislative council is now considered almost certain.
The move, though technical in nature, has intensified speculation about a broader political realignment in the state. Observers say it could shape the next phase of leadership decisions within Bihar’s ruling alliance.
Kumar is currently engaged in his “Samriddhi Yatra”, a statewide outreach programme that is expected to conclude in Patna in the coming days. Political activity is likely to accelerate following the end of the tour, with sources suggesting that key decisions may follow soon after.
During the yatra, Kumar has continued to inaugurate development projects, signalling his active administrative role even as speculation grows about his political future.
Reports indicate that Kumar may take oath as a member of the Rajya Sabha on April 12, with a return to Patna expected shortly thereafter. This timeline has further fuelled conjecture that he could submit his resignation as chief minister to the governor in mid-April, although no formal announcement has been made.
Under constitutional rules, a member of parliament can serve as chief minister, provided they secure membership of the state legislature within six months. This provision leaves Kumar with the option to continue in office temporarily, depending on political calculations.
Meanwhile, discussions within the ruling NDA are said to be intensifying, with deliberations reportedly under way regarding future leadership arrangements.
For now, attention remains firmly fixed on Kumar’s next move. His anticipated resignation from the legislative council is likely to be a pivotal moment, potentially reshaping Bihar’s political trajectory in the weeks ahead.
