Bettiah: An initiative has been launched to open a Gen-G post office in Bettiah, as part of efforts by India Post to modernise services and encourage savings among young people.
The move follows the success of similar Gen-G post offices in states such as Delhi, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat, as well as at campuses including IIT Patna and Bhagalpur Engineering College.
Postal superintendent Manoj Kumar Singh said the department aims to promote the habit of saving among students by providing them with an accessible platform to deposit small amounts from their pocket money.
Officials have proposed setting up the facility on the campus of Government Medical College Hospital (GMCH) in Bettiah. Discussions have been held with the GMCH administration, but the project is currently pending due to space constraints.
The department has also written to local MP Sanjay Jaiswal seeking support for the initiative. Singh said he plans to meet both the MP and the GMCH principal in April to move the proposal forward.
According to officials, the Gen-G post office will differ significantly from traditional facilities, offering a modern, youth-friendly environment. Postmaster Munna Srivastava said the space will feature a cafe-style interior with improved lighting, digital screens and smart service counters.
The new facility is expected to provide faster and more efficient services, including QR code-based parcel booking and tracking. It will also offer WiFi connectivity and a mini library for visitors.
In addition to standard postal services, the centre will provide Aadhaar-related services, passport assistance and access to various savings schemes offered by India Post.
Other features will include digital counters, self-service kiosks, online booking systems, a modern waiting area with token management, and banking services such as savings accounts, insurance and money transfers.
Officials said the initiative is part of a broader push to make postal services more accessible, efficient and appealing to younger users.
