Patna: Weather conditions across Bihar have changed significantly, with the India Meteorological Department issuing orange and yellow alerts for the next 24 hours, particularly in northern and eastern regions of the state.
Strong winds and rain expected
According to the IMD, a combination of moisture from the Bay of Bengal and a cyclonic system from the northwest is likely to trigger strong winds, thunderstorms and rainfall from Wednesday night to Thursday.
Wind speeds of 40 to 60 kmph are expected, along with lightning and possible hailstorms.
Contrasting weather across districts
Different parts of the state witnessed varied weather conditions. Kaimur (Bhabua) recorded the highest temperature at 38.1°C, while Patna experienced relatively pleasant weather after light rain, with temperatures around 29°C.
Aurangabad (Kutumba) recorded the highest rainfall at 2.6 mm.
Yellow alert in 19 districts
The IMD has issued a yellow alert for rain and strong winds in districts including Sitamarhi, Madhubani, Supaul, Araria, Kishanganj, Purnia, Katihar, Darbhanga, Muzaffarpur, Vaishali, Samastipur, Saharsa, Madhepura, Khagaria, Munger, Bhagalpur, Banka and Jamui.
What is Kal Baisakhi?
Meteorologists said the current conditions resemble Kal Baisakhi — a sudden seasonal storm common in April and May across eastern India.
It forms due to the collision of warm and cold air masses and is often accompanied by strong winds, thunderstorms and heavy rain, posing risks to life and property.
Recent rainfall impact
In the past 24 hours, districts including Patna, Banka, Gopalganj and Begusarai recorded light to heavy rainfall. Patna saw light drizzle in the morning followed by heavier showers later in the day.
Chhapra recorded the highest temperature at 34.3°C, though overall temperatures dropped due to rain and thunderstorms.
Why has the weather changed?
Experts attribute the sudden shift to an active western disturbance in north India, combined with moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal and a cyclonic circulation, making the atmosphere unstable.
Outlook for Patna and beyond
In Patna, the sky is expected to remain partly cloudy, with chances of light drizzle and increased humidity. Heavy rainfall is unlikely in the city.
The IMD said weather conditions are likely to stabilise over the next two to three days. However, temperatures are expected to rise again to 35–38°C, with heat intensifying by mid-April.
