Patna: Indian Railways has announced plans to operate more than 18,000 “summer special” train services over the next three months, as authorities move to ease travel during peak seasonal demand and extreme heat.
The national transporter said 18,262 additional trips will be introduced across the country, with thousands already notified. The move is aimed at improving connectivity, reducing long waiting lists and easing overcrowding as passenger numbers surge during the summer period.
The East Central Railway zone will run 2,711 of these services, while Central Railway and North Western Railway are set to operate the highest number overall, with 3,082 and 2,245 trips respectively.
Railway officials said the initiative is expected to benefit millions of passengers by providing greater flexibility and more travel options during one of the busiest times of the year.
In a separate measure, the railways also announced expanded travel access for people with disabilities. Passengers holding a valid Unique Disability ID (UDID) card will now be permitted to travel in unreserved coaches designated for disabled passengers on mail and express trains.
Eligible passengers — including those entitled to concessional fares or carrying valid identification — will be allowed to travel in designated SLRD (seating-cum-luggage rake) and LSLRD coaches, which are reserved for persons with disabilities.
Officials said strict enforcement measures would be introduced to prevent unauthorised passengers from occupying these coaches, with action to be taken against violators. The aim, they added, is to ensure that facilities intended for disabled passengers remain accessible, improving safety, dignity and ease of travel.
The changes are part of a broader effort by Indian Railways to manage seasonal travel pressure while making the network more inclusive.
