Patna: A major exhibition celebrating the richness and evolution of Mithila art will be held at Bihar Museum, Patna from May 9 to June 8, bringing together works of some of the most prominent artists associated with the tradition.
The exhibition will showcase paintings ranging from those of Jagdamba Devi—the first Mithila artist to receive the Padma Shri—to creations by around 50 to 60 contemporary artists whose work has gained recognition both in India and abroad.
Showcasing A Living Tradition
Officials said the exhibition aims to present the journey of Mithila painting from traditional wall art to a globally recognised medium that now appears on canvas and a wide range of contemporary products.
The show will highlight how the art form has evolved in terms of style, aesthetics and presentation since India’s independence.
Special Lecture On May 10
As part of the programme, a special lecture will be organised on May 10, where experts will discuss the transformation of Mithila painting over the decades, examining both its traditional roots and modern adaptations.
Curated By National Award-Winning Artist
The exhibition is being curated by Manisha Jha, a noted Mithila artist and National Award recipient.
According to Ashok Kumar Sinha, additional director of the museum, this is the first initiative of its kind at the institution, aimed at deepening public understanding of the art form and its cultural significance.
Promoting Art And Craft
Officials said Mithila art has gained international recognition, with increasing demand for products featuring its motifs, including textiles, decorative items and everyday objects.
Such products are also being made available at the museum’s souvenir shop as part of efforts to promote the art and support artisans.
The exhibition is expected to attract art enthusiasts, students and visitors interested in exploring one of Bihar’s most celebrated cultural traditions.
