Kishanganj/Patna: The union home department has drawn up an extensive plan to strengthen security along the Indo-Nepal international border in Bihar, amid rising concerns over infiltration and cross-border smuggling in the Seemanchal region.
Under the proposal by the Ministry of Home Affairs, 34 advanced watchtowers will be constructed across border villages in Araria and Kishanganj districts. Officials said the towers will be equipped not only for surveillance but also with sirens and public announcement systems, enabling authorities to issue rapid alerts during emergencies.
Drone monitoring and damaged border pillars
In a parallel move to tighten monitoring, authorities have begun deploying drone cameras to track border pillars along the 231-kilometre stretch from Seemanchal to Kosi. Several pillars have been reported damaged or missing, prompting a drive to replace them with new markers.
Rajesh Kumar, the divisional commissioner, said efforts are under way to strengthen border management while also focusing on the overall development of frontier areas.
Development push under Vibrant Village Programme
The initiative is being implemented under the Centre’s Vibrant Village Programme, which seeks to improve living conditions in remote border settlements. A total of 34 villages have been identified — 22 in four blocks of Kishanganj and 12 in three blocks of Araria.
Alongside security upgrades, these villages will receive targeted grants to improve education, healthcare and basic infrastructure, officials said.
High-level review and heightened activity
Union home minister Amit Shah is expected to chair a high-level review meeting in New Delhi in early May to assess the plan. Administrative activity has already intensified from Patna to Kishanganj in anticipation of the rollout.
The Indo-Nepal border in this region has long been considered sensitive due to recurring incidents of illegal crossings and smuggling.
Faster response, wider surveillance
Officials said the new watchtowers would allow security forces to detect suspicious movements from a distance, while integrated siren systems could alert entire communities within minutes in case of a threat.
The measures, authorities believe, will significantly reinforce the security architecture of Bihar’s border districts while improving resilience in vulnerable villages.
