Patna: The redevelopment of Patliputra Junction in Patna is progressing under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, with officials saying the project is aimed at easing pressure on the city’s main railway station and improving connectivity across Bihar.
Located in the Danapur division, the station is being upgraded to function as an alternative rail hub to Patna Junction. Railway officials said the modernisation would help redistribute passenger traffic within the city and strengthen links between north and south Bihar, as well as improve connectivity between the Danapur and Sonpur railway divisions.
The project has an allocation of Rs 49.30 crore for the 2026–27 financial year. It is intended to upgrade passenger amenities, safety systems, accessibility features and overall infrastructure at the station.
At present, Patliputra Junction handles around 33 pairs of Mail and Express trains and 10 pairs of passenger services. The station has five platforms and records an average daily footfall of 21,734 passengers.
Revenue figures for 2025–26 show the station generating an average of Rs 7.58 lakh per day through the unreserved ticketing system (UTS), and Rs 31.26 lakh via the passenger reservation system (PRS).
Separately, work is also under way on the Patliputra Coaching Complex, a maintenance facility for Vande Bharat trains located near the station. The estimated cost of the project has risen from Rs 199.36 crore to Rs 283.16 crore.
The complex is being developed with stabling lines, pit lines, washing lines, workshop facilities and inspection bays, along with an administrative building.
Railway authorities said the combined development of the station and coaching complex is expected to turn Patliputra into a significant rail hub, with improved passenger handling capacity and upgraded facilities.
