Patna: Around 200 pre-fabricated shops will soon be installed across parks in Patna under a joint initiative of Patna Smart City Limited (PSCL) and the Bihar Rural Livelihoods Promotion Society, popularly known as Jeevika. The units will support a range of commercial activities, including the operation of Sudha booths and other small businesses.
The shops were originally manufactured as part of a larger vending zone planned along the JP Ganga Path. However, the project was redesigned after concerns were raised that the structures would obstruct views of the River Ganga.
Shops Shifted After Riverfront Plan Revised
The initial proposal envisaged the development of a vending zone with 500 shops along the JP Ganga Path at an estimated cost of around Rs 15.45 crore. As part of that plan, 200 pre-fabricated shops had already been manufactured.
Following the redesign, authorities decided not to install the structures along the riverfront. The pre-fabricated shops are currently being stored near Gardanibagh High School until they are relocated to parks across the city.
Digha Vending Zone Plan Scaled Down
Separately, the proposed smart vending zone near Digha Golambar has also undergone significant changes.
The project, spread over nearly 1.93 acres, was initially planned to accommodate 250 shops. Under the revised design, only 50 larger modular outlets with a modern layout will be constructed.
The construction of these outlets is expected to cost around Rs 7.17 crore. The foundation stone for the project was recently laid by the Chief Minister.
Business Opportunities for Brands and Local Vendors
According to the revised plan, the modular outlets will cater to both established brands and local businesses. The project also includes the rehabilitation of vendors currently operating along the Ganga riverbank beneath the JP Setu.
Authorities expect the development to provide organised commercial space while improving facilities for existing vendors.
Tourism and Nightlife Hub Planned
The Patna Municipal Corporation plans to develop the Digha vending zone as more than a conventional marketplace. The project is intended to evolve into a destination supporting tourism and evening recreational activities.
In the second phase, infrastructure including a foot-overbridge, parking facilities, modern toilets, drinking water points, parks and entertainment zones will be developed.
Preliminary work, including land levelling, paving, installation of paver blocks and construction of the drainage network, has already been completed.
