Katihar/Patna: The bordering districts of the state adjoining West Bengal have been put on high alert as polling for the second and final phase of elections takes place in the neighbouring state on Wednesday.
The administration in Katihar said the district border had been completely sealed, with security measures tightened from Tuesday night on the instructions of superintendent of police Shikhar Chaudhary.
Special vigilance has been imposed across police station areas in Barsoi subdivision, including Barsoi, Abadpur, Balrampur, Telta, Sudhani and Kachna. Additional monitoring is also underway in Pranpur and Roshna under Katihar Sadar subdivision, and Amdabad under Manihari subdivision.
Temporary checkpoints set up
Officials said temporary checkpoints had been established on all major roads, junctions and sensitive locations along the Bengal border. Police personnel and magistrates have been deployed to inspect every vehicle entering or leaving the area.
Vehicles are being subjected to detailed checks, including verification of documents and searches of boots and luggage, in an effort to prevent any unlawful activity.
Focus on cash, weapons and suspicious movement
Police said they were closely monitoring the movement of cash, arms and other prohibited items, with technical surveillance also being used. Suspicious individuals are being questioned and identity documents verified.
Motorcycles, private cars and goods vehicles are undergoing extensive checks. Security agencies are also monitoring river routes and unpaved roads to prevent anti-social elements from using alternative crossings.
Border to remain sealed till 6pm
Police said the measures were intended to support free, fair and peaceful polling in West Bengal and to prevent any attempt to influence the electoral process through Bihar routes.
The superintendent of police said the border would remain fully sealed until 6pm, with strict checks continuing on all persons and goods moving towards or from Bengal.
