Patna: The Bihar government is set to expand the urban footprint of Patna through the development of multiple greenfield satellite townships across the capital region, officials said.
The project, approved under the Master Plan 2031, envisions structured urban growth in all directions, with work expected to accelerate in the coming months.
Expansion Across All Directions
The proposed townships will extend the city’s boundaries into surrounding areas, including Punpun in the south, Phulwari and Naubatpur in the west, and Fatuha in the east.
To the north, development will stretch into Sonepur as part of the Hariharnathpur township, significantly widening the capital’s urban limits.
Civic Boundaries Likely To Expand
Officials said parts of the new township areas may be incorporated into the Patna Municipal Corporation, potentially increasing the number of wards from 75 to more than 160.
However, formal approval for the expansion of municipal limits is still under consideration.
Township Details
The Pataliputra township will span around 275 villages across blocks such as Dhanarua, Fatuha, Masaurhi, Phulwari and Punpun.
The Hariharnathpur township, covering about 147 villages, will include areas in blocks such as Dariyapur, Dighwara, Parsa and Sonepur.
Land for these projects is expected to be acquired through a land pooling mechanism.
Infrastructure Boost
A new bridge across the Ganga, being constructed parallel to the existing JP Setu, is expected to enhance connectivity between Patna and Sonepur, supporting the expansion.
Long-Term Urban Planning
Officials said the initiative aligns with long-term plans to create a well-organised metropolitan region, with improved infrastructure and civic amenities.
Urban planners have described the move as a major step towards managing population growth and ensuring planned development in and around the state capital.
