Patna: The Bihar Building Construction Department has called for accelerated completion of thousands of panchayat-level government buildings, as a senior review flagged delays, stalled projects and quality concerns across districts.
A high-level review meeting chaired by department secretary Kumar Ravi examined the status of Panchayat Sarkar Bhawans under construction across the state. Officials were told to prioritise the completion and handover of buildings that are in the final stages of construction.
According to data presented in the meeting, the department is currently overseeing the construction of 2,615 panchayat buildings, with work orders issued for around 2,000 of them. Construction has begun on these projects across multiple districts.
By February 2026, 567 buildings had been completed, while a further 88 were finished in March. Officials were instructed to ensure that 83 additional buildings targeted for completion in April are delivered without further delay. So far, 284 completed buildings have been handed over to the Panchayati Raj Department for use.
However, progress on roughly 300 projects has been hindered due to land disputes and other technical issues. The review meeting stressed the need for coordinated action with district administrations to resolve these bottlenecks.
Ravi cautioned officials against lapses in execution, saying that delays or compromises in construction quality would not be tolerated. He also emphasised the role of the panchayat buildings in strengthening rural governance and said timely completion was essential for their effective functioning.
