Gopalganj: A video purportedly showing a lavish, court-like gathering hosted in honour of the Bihar strongman-politician Anant Singh has gone viral, drawing mixed reactions and prompting a police inquiry.
The footage, widely circulated on social media, appears to show Singh seated prominently at the front of a stage while dancers perform to popular songs, including “Mujhko Rana Ji Maaf Karna”. Supporters can be seen throwing currency notes into the air, creating an atmosphere more akin to a spectacle than a private ceremony.
According to reports, the event took place in Semrao village in Bihar’s Gopalganj district, where Singh had attended an upanayan sanskar (sacred thread ceremony) linked to the family of a local public representative. While the ceremony itself is a traditional Hindu rite of passage, the scale and style of the celebration have attracted attention.
Performances by Bhojpuri artists added to the festive setting, with music and dance continuing late into the gathering. Singh, often referred to by his supporters as “Chhote Sarkar”, appeared relaxed as he watched the proceedings from close range.
However, the video has also triggered concern. Some clips appear to show individuals brandishing firearms during the event, allegedly as part of a show of support for Singh. The display of weapons, if verified, could constitute a violation of law and has raised questions about public safety and enforcement.
Authorities have not yet confirmed the authenticity of the footage. Police in the area said they were examining the video and investigating whether any illegal activity, including the use or display of weapons, had taken place.
The incident has divided opinion online. While some users described the gathering as a throwback to a bygone era of feudal pageantry, others criticised it as a troubling reflection of impunity and weak law enforcement.
