Patna: The family of Lalu Prasad Yadav has been ordered to vacate its official residence in Patna within 15 days, as the Bihar government moves to enforce rules governing the allocation of state housing.
A notice has been served to Rabri Devi, a former chief minister, directing her to vacate the property at 10 Circular Road, which had been allotted during her tenure. The residence is located near that of current chief minister Nitish Kumar.
The directive is part of a broader action by the state’s building construction department, which has issued similar notices to several former ministers who continue to occupy government accommodation despite no longer holding office.
Officials said the move is in line with established rules governing properties under the central housing pool, which require occupants to vacate official residences within a fixed period after leaving ministerial posts. Authorities have emphasised that the 15-day deadline is final and will not be extended.
According to department sources, the action follows instances where former officeholders continued to occupy government residences beyond the permissible period, prompting the need for enforcement measures. Failure to comply within the stipulated timeframe could lead to further administrative action, including penalties.
The development comes as the government seeks to streamline the allocation of official housing and ensure availability for serving ministers. Political observers say the move signals a stricter approach to the use of public resources, with authorities indicating that similar enforcement measures are likely to continue.
