Bhagalpur: Bhagalpur is set to witness a major transformation in its public transport system as the government moves ahead with plans to build a modern electric bus terminal at Tilkamanjhi under the Prime Minister Electric Bus Scheme. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the project has already been finalised, and officials say construction work is likely to begin in July. The project is being developed under the Bihar State Road Transport Corporation (BSRTC) and is expected to improve transport facilities in the city while encouraging eco-friendly travel.
The total estimated cost of the project is around Rs 6.78 crore. Out of this, nearly Rs 1.45 crore will be spent on civil construction work. Officials have said that the foundation stones for electric bus depots planned across Bihar will soon be laid. The Bhagalpur project is among the important developments under the state’s push towards cleaner and more modern public transportation. Authorities believe the new terminal will help manage increasing passenger traffic and provide a better commuting experience for residents.
The upcoming terminal will include several modern facilities for both passengers and transport staff. Plans include a G+1 administrative building, a workshop, two washing ramps, two security posts and 10 charging points for electric buses. The terminal will be capable of operating 25 electric buses, including both 12-metre and 9-metre models. Apart from electric buses, arrangements have also been made for 10 additional CNG and diesel buses. Officials say this will help maintain smooth transport operations during the transition to electric mobility.
Passenger convenience has also been given special attention in the project design. Separate parking areas will be created for four-wheelers, auto-rickshaws and two-wheelers to reduce traffic congestion around the terminal. The project is being developed over nearly 9.66 acres of land, while the main e-bus terminal structure will cover around 5.6 acres. Authorities believe the improved layout and organised parking system will make travel easier and safer for daily commuters.
Under the Prime Minister Electric Bus Scheme, Bihar is expected to receive 400 electric buses, and Bhagalpur alone will get 50 of them. Officials say the introduction of electric buses will help reduce fuel consumption and lower pollution levels in the city. The project is also expected to create new employment opportunities linked to transport operations, maintenance and infrastructure services. The district administration and transport department are now planning to expand the electric bus network further across Bhagalpur district in the future.
With the launch of the e-bus terminal and the arrival of electric buses, Bhagalpur is expected to emerge as one of Bihar’s leading cities in green public transportation. Residents hope the project will not only modernise travel but also make the city cleaner and more environmentally friendly in the years ahead.
