Patna: Patna Metro will install platform screen doors (PSDs) at all 24 stations as part of a citywide safety upgrade aimed at preventing accidents, improving passenger flow, and enhancing operational efficiency.
The rollout will begin with the Priority Corridor, followed by installation across all underground stations on Metro Corridor-2. Officials said the system will act as a physical barrier between passengers and the tracks, significantly reducing the risk of falls and track-related incidents.
Under the plan, elevated stations will be fitted with half-height platform screen doors rising 1.5 metres from the platform floor, while underground stations will receive full-height doors extending up to 2.15 metres. The full-height system is also expected to help regulate air-conditioning efficiency within enclosed stations.
Authorities say the doors will open only when a train has come to a complete stop at its designated position, synchronised with onboard systems. The mechanism is designed to prevent premature access to the tracks and reduce the risk of collision with incoming trains.
Transport planners argue that beyond safety, the system will also assist in managing passenger crowding during peak hours by organising boarding zones and restricting uncontrolled movement near platform edges.
Platform screen doors are widely used in metro systems globally, particularly in high-density urban networks, where they are credited with improving safety outcomes and reducing operational disruptions.
Officials added that the installation across MRTS stations is expected to contribute to energy savings, especially in underground sections, by improving climate control efficiency and reducing air leakage between platforms and tunnels.
The project marks one of the most significant safety upgrades in Patna Metro’s station infrastructure rollout so far, aligning it with modern metro systems in other major Indian cities.
