Patna: The Bihar government and central health authorities have issued a heatwave advisory as temperatures continue to rise sharply across several districts of the state, with many areas recording temperatures close to 42°C.
Large parts of South and Central Bihar, including Patna, have been experiencing intense daytime heat and hot winds over the past few days. According to weather forecasts, severe heat conditions are expected to continue in the coming days, prompting authorities to urge residents to take preventive measures.
Health Advisory Issued by DGHS and Ministry of AYUSH
The AYUSH vertical of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, issued the advisory in coordination with the Ministry of AYUSH.
The advisory stated that young children, pregnant women, elderly people, outdoor workers, and individuals suffering from chronic illnesses such as heart disease and high blood pressure are among the most vulnerable during heatwave conditions.
People have been advised to avoid going outdoors during peak afternoon hours and to remain adequately hydrated throughout the day.
Officials also recommended wearing loose, light-coloured cotton clothing and consuming fluids rich in electrolytes, including buttermilk, coconut water, and lemon water.
Heat Stress Symptoms Should Not Be Ignored
Authorities warned that symptoms such as dizziness, headaches, vomiting, fainting, excessive body heat, confusion, and seizures could indicate serious heat-related illness.
In such situations, individuals have been advised to seek immediate medical attention. Emergency health helplines 108 and 102 may also be contacted if required.
The advisory further stressed the importance of protecting labourers and workers engaged at construction sites, public events, and other outdoor workplaces.
Employers and organisers have been urged to arrange shaded rest areas, ensure regular drinking water breaks, and spread awareness regarding heat stress and dehydration.
IMD Forecasts Above-Normal Temperatures
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast above-normal temperatures across several parts of Northwest and Central India, including Bihar, over the next few days.
Meteorological officials warned that strong sunlight and hot winds during daytime hours could increase the risk of heat exhaustion and dehydration.
Residents have been advised to monitor official weather alerts regularly and avoid unnecessary exposure to the sun.
Traditional Cooling Practices Recommended
Alongside conventional health precautions, the advisory also highlighted traditional cooling practices recommended under AYUSH guidelines.
People have been encouraged to practise Sheetali Pranayama, engage in light yoga activities, and consume seasonal fruits and cooling foods such as cucumber and watermelon to help regulate body temperature.
Authorities said preventive awareness and timely precautions remain critical as heatwave conditions continue across the state.
