Patna: Dr. Diwakar Tejaswi, a senior physician in Patna has warned that prolonged exposure to extreme heat and humidity could significantly increase the risk of stroke, dehydration and electrolyte imbalance, particularly among elderly people and individuals with pre-existing health conditions.
Addressing officials during the “Walk for Life” initiative at the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) office on Fraser Road on Friday, Dr. Diwakar Tejaswi urged people to take extra precautions amid the ongoing heatwave conditions in Bihar.
Dehydration And Heat Increase Stroke Risk
Dr. Tejaswi said severe heat and humidity can increase the likelihood of stroke due to:
- Dehydration and fluid loss
- Excessive sweating
- Thickening of blood
- Sudden fluctuations in blood pressure
According to him, the risk is particularly high among:
- Elderly people
- Patients with hypertension
- Individuals with diabetes
- People suffering from heart disease
He warned that heat-related stress can place additional strain on the body and aggravate existing medical conditions.

Electrolyte Imbalance Becoming Common
The physician also highlighted growing cases of electrolyte imbalance during summer months.
He said excessive sweating often results in loss of sodium and other essential minerals from the body.
Dr. Tejaswi cautioned that consuming large amounts of plain water without adequate salt intake or balanced nutrition could itself lead to health complications.
Symptoms linked to electrolyte imbalance may include:
- Weakness
- Dizziness
- Fatigue
- Muscle cramps
- Confusion
- Fainting in severe cases
Doctors Advise Hydration And Balanced Diet
To reduce the risk of stroke and heat-related illnesses, Dr. Tejaswi advised people to:
- Drink water regularly throughout the day
- Consume ORS and electrolyte-rich fluids
- Drink lemon water and coconut water
- Avoid unnecessary exposure to direct sunlight
- Stay away from excessively hot environments
- Eat light and balanced meals
- Monitor blood pressure and blood sugar levels regularly
Warning Signs Should Not Be Ignored
The doctor urged people to seek immediate medical attention if they experience symptoms such as:
- Sudden dizziness
- Weakness
- Difficulty speaking
